On the occasion of International Women in Engineering Day (IWED), Nepal Engineering Association (NEA) with the support of UNOPs and other organisations, including RAP3 MHLR, organised an event. This was to celebrate the contribution of women across all engineering fields and identify the career opportunities and challenges that there are for women in this field. Women engineers and student representatives attended the event with facilitators from various organisations and distinguished speakers: Dr. Tri Ratna Bajracharya, NEA President, Ms. Shanti Malla, First Women Engineer of Nepal, Ms. Meena Shrestha, DWS Deputy Director, Ms. Sarita Dawadi, Head of Dept. of Irrigation, and Dr. Sudha Shrestha, Head of Dept. of Architecture.
The participants in the event were divided into 4 interactive groups and with the support of facilitators, collectively discussed the following themes:
Theme 1: Getting More Women in Engineering
Theme 2: Succeeding in engineering
Theme 3: Creating a supportive and safe work environment in engineering
Theme 4: Women in professional associations and networks
The aim of this event is to share and collect views, experiences and ideas to understand the barriers women face to enter and sustain their career in the engineering field. Discussion also focussed around what needs to be done to involve more women and girls in engineering. At the end of the workshop, facilitators from each group presented the key points from the discussion and this was recorded for future reference.
