Rara Lake

Mugu is the district behind Rara Lake, and reaching it comes down to one choice: fly to Talcha, or work up the long road and trail from Surkhet or Jumla. The district headquarters, Gamgadhi, and Talcha airport both sit in Chhayanath Rara Municipality, while the lake is the main feature of Rara National Park, which spans Jumla and Mugu7,6,4. This page covers the whole district; the walking route is on the Rara Lake trek page, and the other far-west districts are in the districts hub.

Where it is

Mugu is a district of Karnali Province4. It covers 3,535 km2, has Gamgadhi as its headquarters, and is known as both the most remote and the least developed district in Nepal1. Its geography is very rugged1. Gamgadhi is also the seat of Chhayanath Rara Municipality, which was established on 10 March 20177.

The 2021 census counted 64,549 people1, against 55,286 in 20111.

Rara Lake, the biggest lake in Nepal, lies in Mugu1. Its elevation is 2,990 m2,1; the Rara Lake encyclopaedia entry gives 2,975 m4.

Getting there

By air

Talcha Airport, also called Rara Airport (ICAO code VNRR), is a domestic airport in Chhayanath Rara that serves Rara National Park6. It was built in 1975 and ran on a single gravel runway until 2015, when the runway was asphalted6. Talcha lies at 2,950 m2. Flights from Nepalgunj or Surkhet land there, but flights from Nepalgunj to Talcha are irregular3. Jumla Airport is the other nearest airport4.

In October 2026 Sita Air offered Nepalgunj to Rara flights, scheduled and charter, of about 30 minutes in a Dornier 2289; Nepal Vision Treks gives 25 minutes2. Operators and routes are covered in flights to Talcha.

From Talcha the lake is a walk: Sita Air gives nearly 2 hours9; Summit Air and Nepal Vision Treks give 3 to 4 hours8,2.

By road

A public bus runs from Surkhet to Gamgadhi, the district headquarters4. Jumla is the nearest town to the lake, which has no connection to the national road network4; the trek from Jumla takes about 3 days3. Read Jumla for the start of that route.

A road approach also exists to the edge of the park. A May 2018 Buddha Air itinerary drives to the border of Rara National Park, from where the lake is about 40 minutes’ walk, and describes the Karnali highway as graveled3. Its legs:

Leg Distance or time Note
Surkhet to Guranshe 20 km by jeep Start of the May 2018 itinerary3
Guranshe to Kalikot headquarters about 7 hours Winding roads and inclines3
Manma to Salleri about 9 hours by jeep Salleri is the park entrance3

The itinerary spends its first night in Manma, which has several hotels3. The same page recommends a jeep as the most comfortable vehicle3. Surkhet is covered under Surkhet.

When to go

From December to March temperatures around the lake are below freezing, and heavy snowfall blocks the way to it4. April to June is warm in the region4.

Operators name the visiting months differently. Nepal Vision Treks gives September to November and May to June2; Summit Air gives August to October8. September and October fall inside both ranges.

Summer brings colour to the approach: in the summer months wildflowers carpet the forest floor on the path to the lake3. Around Guranshe, on the road from Surkhet, the rhododendrons bloom in March and April3.

Flights from Nepalgunj to Talcha are irregular3, so allow a spare day at each end. The monsoon and its effect on the roads are covered in monsoon road closures.

Rara Lake and Rara National Park

Rara Lake is the largest freshwater lake in the Nepalese Himalayas4, and the main feature of Rara National Park, which covers 106 km24. The lake is 5.1 km long, 2.7 km wide and up to 167 m deep4. It was declared a Ramsar site in September 20074. The Nepali Army protects the lake area and the park4. The Rara snowtrout is endemic to the lake4, and the lake changes colour up to five times a day depending on the climate4.

The park entrance is at Salleri, and the lake is a 40-minute walk from it3. Other park exits are at Majhghat, Lamachaur and Talcha3. A canteen run by the Nepal Army and the park office stand near the lake shore3.

Murma Top, south-west of the lake at 3,726 m, is a hike of about 3 hours, and a visit means a night inside the park3. Chhuchemara Hilltop, at 4,090 m, is a day hike on Nepal Vision Treks’ route2. For route detail see the Rara Lake trek.

Permits

In October 2026 the Department of Immigration’s trekking route and permit fee table listed Mugu at USD 100 per person per week, with USD 15 per day beyond one week5. The area it names is Mugumakarmarong Rural Municipality, wards 1 to 95. For comparison, the same table listed these far-west and Karnali areas:

District Permit After the first period Seen
Mugu USD 100 per person per week USD 15 per day beyond 1 week October 20265
Humla USD 50 per person per week USD 10 per day beyond 1 week October 20265
Bajhang USD 90 per week USD 15 per day beyond 1 week October 20265
Darchula USD 90 per person per week USD 15 per day beyond 1 week October 20265
Lower Dolpa USD 20 per person per week USD 5 per day beyond 1 week October 20265
Upper Dolpa USD 500 per person for the first 10 days USD 50 per day beyond 10 days October 20265

Rara National Park charges an entry fee per person per entry; in October 2026 the Nepal Tourism Board’s park entry-fee table listed it as follows, with children under 10 free10:

Visitor Rara National Park entry Seen
Nepali NPR 100 per person per entry October 202610
SAARC national NPR 1,500 per person per entry October 202610
Foreigner NPR 3,000 per person per entry October 202610

Rules for each permit area are collected in restricted-area permits, and park entry charges in national park fees.

Where to stay

Salleri, the park entrance, has few hotels, and accommodation closer to the lake than Salleri takes a two-hour walk3. There are no hotels on the lake bank at Milichaur; Danfe Hotel and Village Heritage and Resort stand away from the bank3. Hotels are also found near the park exits at Majhghat, Lamachaur and Talcha3.

On the road in, Manma has several hotels3. Surkhet, the regional capital, has hotels, hospitals and academic institutions3. On the trek from Jumla the route has homestays and restaurants3, and an operator’s itinerary lists teahouse, lodge or tent accommodation2.

Safety

Mugu is described as the most remote district in Nepal, and its terrain is very rugged1.

Winter is the main seasonal hazard: below-freezing temperatures and heavy snow block the way to the lake from December to March4. Flights to Talcha are irregular3, so a fixed return date is a risk.

Talcha sits at 2,950 m and the lake at 2,990 m2. Murma Top rises to 3,726 m3 and Chhuchemara Hilltop to 4,090 m2.

On the air side, a Makalu Air Cessna 208B skidded off the runway at Rara in 2011 and four of the 11 occupants were injured6. The airport’s runway was asphalted in 20156.
