West Nepal has no single best month, because the answer depends on whether the plan is a flight to Talcha, a bus up the Karnali Highway or a trek to Khaptad. Sources give different month ranges for the same lake, so this page sets them side by side, picks the Nepal Tourism Board’s figure as the baseline and explains where the rest differ. The road side of the question is in monsoon road closures, and the other planning pages are in the getting there hub.
The seasons
Nepal has five seasons: spring, summer, monsoon, autumn and winter2. Nepal Vision Treks puts spring at March to May, the monsoon at June to August, autumn at September to November and winter at December to February4. The Nepal Tourism Board says that as in most trekking areas of Nepal, the best time to visit is spring and autumn2. Spring is when the rhododendrons bloom, and the clearest skies come after the monsoon in October and November2.
Altitude matters in the far west. Average temperatures in Nepal drop 6 degrees C for every 1,000 m gained2, and in mountainous regions winter temperatures can fall below zero2. Rara National Park ranges from 2,800 to 4,039 m, with the lake at 2,990 m7.
Rara: what each source says
The sources give these windows for Rara. The Nepal Tourism Board is the government source and is the one used as the baseline here; newer pages are listed above older ones.
| Source | Months | Seen |
|---|---|---|
| Nepal Tourism Board | February to April and October to November | October 20261 |
| Nepal Vision Treks | September to November and May to June | October 20264 |
| Summit Air | August to October | October 20265 |
| Bardia Homestay (Khaptad and Rara) | mid-September to December and March to May | October 20266 |
| Kathmandu Post | September to October and April to May | February 20188 |
October is the one month inside all five ranges1,4,5,6,8. The Nepal Tourism Board also says there is no seasonal constraint on travelling in and through Nepal, and that December and January, when winter is at its severest, bring bright sun and brilliant views2.
Monsoon: June to September
Eighty percent of all the rain in Nepal falls during the monsoon, June to September2. Bardia Homestay says the monsoon makes the trek to Khaptad and Rara difficult6, and the climate note for Rara National Park gives June to August as monsoon season, making the trek difficult7.
The roads show it. In a report of 17 August 2025 landslides blocked the Karnali Highway at Gaganekhola and Bihani in Kalikot, at Khidki Jyula in Dailekh and near Nagma on the road to Mugu9. In July 2026 the highway was completely blocked from 7 pm on a Saturday after a landslide at Gagane Khola, during the peak season for transporting apples from Jumla, Mugu and Humla10. The full record is in monsoon road closures.
Winter: December to March
At Rara Lake the temperatures from December to March are below freezing, and heavy snowfall blocks the way to the lake3. Bardia Homestay says that from December to February both national parks are covered with snow and the trails are not accessible6. Nepal Vision Treks adds that the climb can be harder in winter because of the temperature4.
Winter has its own pull. The Nepal Tourism Board’s park page says 214 species of birds are seen at Rara in winter1. The Kathmandu Post reported in February 2018 that Rara’s winter visitors depend on snow, and that without snowfall that winter the lake did not attract them8. The Nepal Tourism Board notes winter rains are more pronounced in the western hills2.
Khaptad
Khaptad National Park was established in 1984, covers 225 km2 across Bajhang, Bajura, Achham and Doti, and ranges in elevation from 1,400 to 3,300 m11. The only seasonal guidance in the sources is Bardia Homestay’s: mid-September to December and March to May are the best time to visit Khaptad and Rara6. The same page puts Shuklaphanta National Park at September to mid-December and February to the end of May6.
Getting there in season
The Nepal Tourism Board’s access line for Rara is a flight from Nepalgunj to Talcha Airport, 35 minutes, then a 2-hour trek to the lake, or a 2.5-day trek via Jumla1. Timings for the road legs are in buses and jeeps and Kathmandu to the far west by road.
