Buses and jeeps run to Gamgadhi, the Mugu district headquarters7. The lake itself has no connection to the national road network1, yet vehicles were arriving at Rara daily in October 201813. This page lays out each leg with its time and source, and states conflicts with both sources. For other routes into the region see the getting there hub.

How to reach Rara Lake by road

Two main ways reach Rara Lake: fly from Nepalgunj to Talcha Airport, or drive from Nepalgunj to Gamgadi and trek for 3 to 4 days to the lake8. The road route is the slower of the two, and it passes through Surkhet, Kalikot and Gamgadhi12. HopNepal puts the whole overland trip at 2 to 3 days by jeep or bus12.

The lake itself is outside the national road network, and from the nearest town, Jumla, it can only be reached by trekking1. Jumla and Mugu are the two districts that share Rara National Park, and most of the park lies in Mugu with a small part in Jumla4.

Kathmandu to Rara Lake: the overland itinerary

From Kathmandu the road itinerary has four steps. First, reach Nepalgunj: at least five flights a day run from Kathmandu on local airlines, or a local or deluxe bus takes about twelve hours7. The bus road can be bad, especially in the rainy season7. The flight takes one hour10.

Second, go from Nepalgunj to Kalikot. A bus runs the route in a whole day7. Third, from Kalikot another bus runs to Nagma, and from Nagma a bus goes on to Gamgadhi7. The bus follows the famous Karnali Highway7; the Karnali Highway page covers that road in detail.

Fourth, walk from Gamgadhi to the lake, a five-hour hike7. The Mugu district page covers Gamgadhi and the park entrances.

The alternative starts from Surkhet instead. The drive from Kathmandu to Surkhet takes approximately 13 to 15 hours on the Great Karnali Highway12. From Surkhet the sources name Jumla or Mugu as the onward jeep destinations11.

A jeep tour from Kathmandu

Mountface Nepal’s 2026 listing runs a Rara jeep tour that starts and ends in Kathmandu9. It follows the classic route along the Karnali Highway9 and reaches a maximum altitude of 3800 m9. The same listing names October to May as the best time for the tour9.

How to get to Rara Lake from Nepalgunj

Local jeeps are preferred over buses on the Nepalgunj to Gamgadi road because of the rough terrain8. The road is mostly unpaved and narrow, with occasional steep ascents8. The drive takes 10 to 12 hours depending on road conditions8. From Gamgadhi, the walk to the lake is five hours by Magical Nepal’s account7, although Action Nepal Treks plans for 3 to 4 days of trekking from Gamgadi8. The two figures conflict.

If you would rather skip the drive, flights from Nepalgunj go to either Talcha or Jumla7. The Talcha flight takes one hour by Action Nepal Treks’ figure and 25 minutes by Nepal Vision Treks’8,10. Action Nepal Treks calls flights to Talcha unpredictable8. The flights to Talcha page covers the air side.

From Jumla airport you can take a bus or jeep to Gamgadhi, the Mugu headquarters7. A trek from Jumla to Rara needs three days of walking and is of moderate difficulty7. Start at Jumla for that route.

Road conditions, and what was reported when

In October 2018, Setopati reported that roads from Nagma to Rara turn muddy in the rainy season and dusty in winter13. The same report counted around 300 motorcycles, 150 jeeps and 10 buses arriving at Rara every day in 2018, carrying visitors13. The Nepalgunj to Gamgadi road is mostly unpaved and narrow, with occasional steep ascents8.

The wider upgrade effort is older. In November 2010, the World Bank approved financing for the Government of Nepal to upgrade 405 kilometres of dry-season roads to all-weather standard6. The same approval named Kalikot and Jumla among the district headquarters to connect to the strategic road network6. Read monsoon road closures for how rain interrupts these roads.

Where to sleep and what it costs

Unusual Traveler (17 August 2020) puts a lakeside room at about $12 to $15 and a room at Talcha, where most flights land, at $10 with plenty of availability14. It estimates food and accommodation together at about 22 USD per day14. There is no direct flight from Kathmandu to Rara Lake, so every route runs through Nepalgunj14. Talcha is the closest airport to Gamgadhi for the start of the five-hour trek to the lake14.

Which months suit the drive

Winter months are too cold, and heavy snowfall can block access to the lake7. Magical Nepal lists September and October or April and May as the months to go7. Mountface Nepal lists October to May for its jeep tour9. The two overlap in October and in April and May.

The rainy season turns the Nagma to Rara roads muddy13, and the Kathmandu to Nepalgunj bus road can be bad in the same months7. Winter dust is the other complaint on the approach road13.

What a Rara Lake trip costs by road

Government sources give fees, not trip budgets. The Nepal Tourism Board park entry table lists Rara National Park entry at NRs 100 for Nepalis, NRs 1,500 for SAARC nationals and NRs 3,000 for foreigners, per person per entry, as seen in October 20263.

Rara National Park entry in October 2026: NRs 100 (Nepali), NRs 1,500 (SAARC), NRs 3,000 (foreigners), per person per entry3.

The Department of Immigration’s trekking table lists the Mugu route at USD 100 per person per week as seen in October 2026, covering Mugumakarmarong Rural Municipality, wards 1 to 92.

Best Heritage Tour (18 June 2025) lists these road-leg prices, an operator’s estimates and not fixed fares11:

Item Price Seen
Kathmandu to Surkhet by bus $20 to $3011 18 June 2025
Surkhet to Jumla or Mugu by local jeep $50 to $8011 18 June 2025
Rara National Park entry $3011 18 June 2025

The $30 entry figure (18 June 2025) conflicts with the Nepal Tourism Board table, which lists NRs 3,000 for foreigners in October 20263,11.

Why choose Rara Lake

Rara Lake is the largest freshwater lake in the Nepalese Himalayas1, at an elevation of 2,990 m1. The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation names the lake as the main attraction of Rara National Park4. IUCN, in 2020, recorded that Rara sits at 2,990 metres above sea level and is the largest lake in Nepal5.

In April 2020 IUCN listed inadequate visitor facilities and the lack of a site management plan among the challenges at the Ramsar site5. IUCN and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation were then working to develop a management plan for the Rara Lake Ramsar site5.

Conclusion: pick the route by time

By air, Action Nepal Treks gives one hour from Nepalgunj to Talcha8, then a hike of 2 to 3 hours (HopNepal) or four hours (Magical Nepal)12,7. By road, it is 10 to 12 hours from Nepalgunj to Gamgadi, then the hike8,7. Fees are in the Department of Immigration and Nepal Tourism Board tables2,3. The bus and jeep guide lists the other ground routes in the region.
